MPhil Priti Pragati Rath has won the IADR KULZER Award

The Faculty is proud to share that one of our PhD students, MPhil Priti Pragati Rath has won the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) / KULZER Travel Award for her work on Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLN) carrying Acyclovir, a low soluble drug.

With around two-thirds of the global population affected by Herpes infection, Acyclovir holds promise. The drug carries anti-viral potential against Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), limiting the outbreak of the infection. However, to reach the required range to stop the virus growth, a higher dose of Acyclovir has to be administered 3-5 times per day, leading to chronic adverse effects.

To tackle this, MPhil Priti developed a solution based on SLN carrying Acyclovir. SLN is a type of non-toxic drug delivery system that carries slowly release the drug into the system. She synthesized and optimised acyclovir-loaded SLN to improve retention of the drug in the system, which eventually decreases the frequency of intake of the drug per day, leading to reduce chances of chronic toxicity in individuals.

Along with the travel award comes a funding prize which MPhil Priti intends to use to support her attendance at the IADR General Session 2022.
