I obtained a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) from the University of Passo Fundo in 2005. In the same year, the Academy of Dental Materials awarded me with the "Academy of Dental Materials Student Award,” an award presented by to the most outstanding student researchers in the field of Dental Materials.
After graduating DDS, I joined the University of São Paulo to pursue a Master’s degree in Dental Materials. In 2007, my dissertation work received the George C. Paffenbarger Student Research Award, an award offered by the Academy of Dental Materials to recognize the best paper in the field of Dental Materials annually.
After obtaining the MSc in 2007, I joined PhD in Dental Materials in the University of São Paulo. The thesis was developed in collaboration with the Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences, and Endodontics of the University of Michigan under Prof. Jacques E. Nör (University of Michigan) guidance. The thesis showed it be possible to regenerate the dental pulp in full-length root canals using dental pulp stem cells.
After graduating Ph.D. in 2010, I joined the University of Passo Fundo as a lecturer till 2012 when I joined the National University of Singapore as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry. In 2014, the NUS Centre for Advanced 2D Materials and Graphene Research Centre and the Department of Material Science and Engineering / NUS appointed me as a Faculty.
In 2018 I was tenured as Associate Professor and invited to be the Assistant Dean of Research as a preparatory stage for the leadership position of Vice Dean (equivalent to Associate Dean in the U.S.A.). In 2021, I was promoted to Vice Dean Research to spearhead, plan and develop the research portfolio of NUS Dentistry. Since then, I have dedicated my time to re-structure the Research Office, streamlining processes to increase the efficiency of research processes and improve communication channels, and creation of new structures and programs which can significantly impact the research perfoming processes and outcomes and international visibility and recognition of NUS Dentistry as a progressive research entity that focus on excellent and disruptive research. Some examples include the drafting of Research Roadmap: Bioengineering oral health through convergent biofabrication and artificial intelligence-driven platforms, which culminated with the opening of the Oral Care Health Innovations and Designs Singapore (ORCHIDS), a research centre that coordinates world-class research programs in microbiology, nanomaterials, regenerative medicine, 3D printing technologies, and health devices which I serve as Fouding Director. I have also championed the creation of the first Tooth Bank (2020) and Dental Stem Cell Bank (2023) in Singapore to facilitate and increase the impact of research in Singapore.
For my scientific accomplishments and excellence, I received both the IADR Distinguished Scientist Young Investigator Award and the IADR/DMG Stephen Bayne Mid-Career Award in 2020.
